Political Socialization
A lifelong process by which people form their ideas about politics and acquire political values. The family, educational system, peer groups, and the mass media all play a role.
Ethnocentrism
Evaluation of other cultures according to preconceptions originating in the standards and customs of one’s own culture.
Demography
The study of statistics such as births, deaths, income, or the incidence of disease, which illustrate the changing structure of human populations.
Cross-Cutting Cleavages
A social science term that refers to the structure of two cleavages, such as race, political, religious divisions etc., in society.
Political Predisposition
How you lean, liberal or conservative, before you hear any outside info from a candidate or political party.
Reinforcing Cleavages
One of the ethnic groups being all rich and all the other poor.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
An aggregate measure of measure of production equal to the sum of the gross values added of all resident institutional units engaged in production.
Socioeconomic Status (SES)
An economic and sociological combined total measure of a person’s work experience and of an individual’s or family’s economic and social position in relation to others, based on income, education, and occupation.
Ethnicity
The fact or state of belonging to social group that has a common national or cultural tradition.
Fundamentalism
A form of a religion, especially Islam or Protestant Christianity, that upholds belief in the strict, literal interpretation of scripture.
Gender Gap
The discrepancy in opportunities, status, attitudes, etc., between men and women.
Race
A group of people sharing the same culture, history, language, etc.; an ethnic group.
