What is dementia?
Loss of cognitive function that interferes with routine personal, social, and occupational activities
What is amnesia?
Short/long term memory loss, the inability not remember facts or events
What is aphasia?
The inability to communicate
What is apraxia?
The inability to preform ADLs/ use common items
What is agnosia?
The inability to correctly interpret signs and senses/ identify common items
What is receptive aphasia?
Person cannot understand words
What is expressive aphasia?
Person cannot talk, but they can understand what others are saying
What is the first stage of Alzheimer’s?
Early stage- recent memory loss Mild difficulty with words Decrease in concentration Seek a routine Errors in judgment Difficulty planning or decision making
What is the second stage of Alzheimer’s ?
The middle stage- Increase in the inability to have a conversation Difficulty reading and writing Many get lost Repetitive actions Needs reminders of ADLs
What is the final stage of Alzheimer’s?
Late stage- Little to no facial expression Mute Incontinent b&b Decrease in appetite Needs all help with ADLs
What is sun downing?
Signs, symptoms, and behaviors of Alzheimer’s but only at night, person becomes restless and agitated, they need a nap
What is a hallucination?
Seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling something that is not real
Caused by poor vision and hearing
What is a delusion?
A false belief
Ex- people may think they’re in jail, or are being killed, or being attacked
What is a catastrophic reaction?
Blowing things out of proportion, person reacts as if there is a disaster or tragedy
