Describe supine position
Back lying
Flat bed
Head and shoulders supported on a pillow
Arms and hands on sides, palms up
Describe fowlers position
Semi-sitting, bed raise between 45/60 degrees Straight spine Head supported with a pillow Each arm supported with pillows * commonly used with patients with respiratory disorders because it make breathing easier
Describe the prone position
Person is lying on their abdomen with head to one side
Flat bed
Pillows under head, abdomen, and lower legs
Arms flexed at elbows with hands near head
Explain the lateral or side lying position
Person is laying on one side
Beds flat
Pillow against back so the body makes 45 degrees
Upper leg is in front of the lower leg
Pillows under head and neck, ankle and upper leg and thigh, and under upper hand
Describe the sims or semi-prone position
Person lies of left side with right leg sharply flexed so it is not on topof lower leg
Left arm is behind the person

Moving a person from one place to another
What does it mean when a patients dependence level is total?
Person cannot help with transfer
Person transferred with mechanical lift
What does it mean when a patient need extensive assistance?
The person can bear some weight
they can sit up with help

What does it mean when a patient needs limited assistance?
The person is highly involved in moving or transferring
Needs some help moving legs
Stand-assist devices may be used
Sliding boards are used when transferring from bed to chair
When a patients dependence level is supervision, what does that mean?
The staff needs to look after them
May have to give cues
Help encourage person

What does it mean when’s person is independent?
They can walk without help
Sometimes limited assistance is needed
What are good body mechanics ?
Stand with good Posture Back straight Bend kegs, not back Face person Do not turn/twist, Pivot
What is always used when transferring?
Transfer belt
How do you ensure safety when transferring?
Make sure person is wearing non skid socks or shoes
Tie shoes tightly
Check length of gown or robe
Lock bed, wheelchair, stretcher wheels
Why do patients bed to change positions?
To prevent bed sores
