What is mental health?
How a person copes with life
What is anxiety?
Vague, uneasy feeling in response to stress
What are defense mechanisms?
Unconscious reactions that black unpleasant or threatening feelings
What is denial ( defense mechanism) ?
Refusing to accept or believe something, denying it
What is projection (defense mechanism)?
Blaming another person or object for unacceptable behaviors, emotions, or ideas
What is repression (defense mechanism)?
Hold down, keep back thoughts or experiences “forget about I t”
What is suppression (defense mechanism)?
Consciously keeping something to yourself
What is displacement (defense mechanism)?
A person moves behaviors or emotions from one person, place, or thing to another person, place, or thing
What is general anxiety disorder?
Nervous about certain things
What is panics disorder?
Intense sudden feeling of fear, terror, anxiety or dread. Person feels shaky, pale, sweaty, HR increases, feels “doomed”
What is a phobia?
An intense fear of an object, situation, or activity that has little to no actual danger
What is OCD?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder, when a person repeats a act over and over again to make an unpleasant thought go away
What is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder, usually occurs after traumatic events, people get flashbacks that can make person think situation is happening all over again
What are affective disorders?
Disturbances in mood
What is seasonal affective disorder (SAD)?
When people become depressed in winter
What is bipolar disorder?
Extreme mood changes
What is schizoaffective?
Loss of contact with reality and causes mood problems
What is anorexia?
When people have an intense fear of gaining weight, so they do not eat a lot and tend to see selves as fat
What is bulimia?
When girls eat a lot and purged afterward to get all the food out
Common to vomit, use laxatives, enemas, and diuretics
What is suicide?
To kill oneself, usually from drepression
What is schizophrenia?
Split mind, people become paranoid and have hallucinations
When taking care of a person who abuses substances, as a CNA what is important for you to make sure you do?
Don’t judge
Be patient
Don’t take things personal
Decrease alcohol and drugs
What is self-mutilation?
Cutting yourself, most common in girls
What are some suicide warning signs?
Mood change from sad to happy Giving things away Writing goodbye letters Make a will Purchasing dangerous stuff, gun/pills/rope
What is sympathy?
Feeling what the person is feeling
What is empathy?
Understanding what the person is going through
