chapter 44 Flashcards
menieres disease
There are changes in fluid volume in bony and membranous labyrinth
Increased volume of endolymph fluid in the inner ear
Progressive hearing loss and tinnitus
Affects those age 40–50, unknown etiology
Episodic vertigo with SNHL
No specific diagnostic test
Positive Romberg
Recommend that the client consume low-salt diet to reduce/prevent further fluid retention
Treatment includes low-salt diet, diuretics, and steroids
Meniett device delivers pulses of pressure to inner ear that may help reduce vestibular symptoms
If condition is resistant to treatment, surgical destruction of inner ear structures may help
Vestibular Schwannomas
AKA: acoustic neuromas
Benign tumors present around CN VIII (auditory nerve)
Symptoms due to compression of CN VIII
Tinnitus
Hearing loss
Loss of balance means positive Romberg
Diagnosis by MRI
Surgical tumor removal if needed
cranial nerve
AKA: acoustic neuromas
Benign tumors present around CN VIII (auditory nerve)
Symptoms due to compression of CN VIII
Tinnitus
Hearing loss
Loss of balance means positive Romberg
Diagnosis by MRI
Surgical tumor removal if needed
inner ear
AKA: acoustic neuromas
Benign tumors present around CN VIII (auditory nerve)
Symptoms due to compression of CN VIII
Tinnitus
Hearing loss
Loss of balance means positive Romberg
Diagnosis by MRI
Surgical tumor removal if needed
Balance depends upon vision, function of the vestibular system & proprioception (neurological
position sense)
middle ear
tympanic
Ossicles: malleus, incus, stapes
Tympanic membrane
Eustachian tube small passageway that connects the throat to the middles ear
The Eustachian tube prevents the tympanic membrane from rupturing by equalizing the pressure of the inner ear & outside atmosphere e,g, during flight takeoff
Main function of the middle ear is to transmit the sound waves from the external ear to the inner ear.
outer ear
pinna
external auditory
canal
