Program Music
Instrumental music endowed with literary or pictorial associations, especially popular in the nineteenth century.
Absolute Music (or Pure Music)
Music that has no literary, dramatic, or pictorial program. Also called pure music.
Idee Fixe (Fixed Idea)
“Fixed Idea”; a term coined by Berlioz for a recurring musical idea that links different movements of a work.
Overture
An introductory movement, as in an opera or oratorio, often presenting melodies from arias to come. Also an orchestral work for concert performance.
Incidental Music
Music written to accompany dramatic works.
Symphonic Poem (Also Tone Poem)
One-movement orchestral form that develops a poetic idea, suggests a scene, or creates a mood, usually associated with the Romanic era. Also Tone Poem.
