Chapter 4- The Nervous System Flashcards
Ependymal cells
Line ventricles of brain and produce CSF
Microglia
Phagocytize cells that ingest and breakdown waste products and pathogens in CNS
Astrocytes
Nourish neuron and form blood-brain barrier
Collection of cell bodies in CNS and PNS
CNS- nucleon
PNS- ganglion
Na/K ATPase
Maintains resting membrane potential of -70mV by moving 3Na+ out for every 2K+ ions into the cell
Divisions of the spinal cord
- Cervical
- Thoracic
- lumbar
- sacral
Dorsal root ganglia
Cell bodies of sensory neurons
PNS
- somatic- sensory/motor neurons
2. autonomic- involuntary muscles and glands
nerves
collections of neurons in the PNS and may contain multiple types of information (sensory and motor). they contain cell bodies in ganglia
tracts
collections of neurons in CNS and contain only one type of information. contain cell bodies in nuclei
Acetylcholine
neurotransmitter released by the preganglionic neuron in both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. postganglionic neuron in sympathetic nervous system usually releases norepinephrine, while the postganglionic neuron in the parasympathetic nervous system releases acetylcholine.
