What are the biological impacts of low SES? 2
What can they cause?
Higher rates of blood pressure, higher blood cholesterol and impaired glucose regulation: Increases the risk of developing chronic conditions such as CVD, kidney failure, etc
Higher rates of low birth weightL higher risk of chronic diseases in adulthood
What are the sociocultural impacts of low SES?
What can they cause?
Low levels of education: unaware of the risk factors of many diseases (lack of health literacy.) They might be more likely to consume alcohol excessively, smoke, misuse drugs, increasing risk of CVD, cancers, respiratory problems, etc
Food insecurity: lead to them not having sufficient nutritional intake
Unemployment and financial stress: increased rates of anxiety and depression
Less likely to access health services
What are the environmental impacts of low SES?
What can they cause?
Greater exposure to fast food outlets in close proximity and lack of access to fresh food: increases rates of high blood cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, deficiency conditions
Poor quality housing and dangerous neighbourhoods: increases the risk of injury
Higher rates of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke: increases the risk of cancers and respiratory conditions
