Chapter 4: males and females Flashcards
Biologically why do males have poorer health status than females?
Males generally accumulate excess fat in their abdomen (compared to females (hips). As the abdomen is closer to the heart, males have increased levels of heart disease than females
Males have higher levels of testosterone compared to females, meaning they are more prone to risk-taking behavior, resulting in higher rates of injury
What is the sociocultural reason males have negative conditions?
Due to macho attitude, males are less likely to express themselves emotionally ( as it is seen as weak).
This can result in anxiety, depression, etc
As a result, males are less likely to access healthcare, increasing rates of undiagnosed chronic illnesses
What is the environmental reason males have negative conditions?
Males are more likely to be employed in labor-intensive jobs that expose them to building sites
heavy machinery
hazardous substances,
-which increase the risk of injury, disability, and potentially mortality
