Socialization
The process by which people learn to function in their culture.
- Entering and disengaging from a series roles and becoming aware of themselves as they interact with others
Secondary Socialization
The process of learning what’s the appropriate behaviour as a member of a smaller group within larger society.
Primary Socialization
The process of mastering the basic skills required to operate in society during childhood. Influenced my parents and friends
Anticipatory Socialization
Involves beginning to take on the norms and behaviours of the roles to which we aspire
Resocialization
Occurs when powerful socializing agents deliberately cause rapid change in people’s values, roles, and self-conception, sometimes against their will. Accompanied by a ceremony or initiation rite.
Total Institution
Settings in which people are isolated from the larger society and under strict control and constant supervision of specialized staff
Generalized other role
The ability to understand and take into account the attitudes and viewpoints of those in our society
Self fulfilling prophecy
An expectation that helps bring about what it predicts
Significant others
People who play important roles in the early socialization experiences of children
