Culture
The sum of socially transmitted ideas, practices, and material objects created by people for dealing with real-life problems. Enables people to thrive in, adapt to, in environment
Ethnocentrism
Judging others cultures exclusively by the standards of one’s own culture
Norms
Guiding rules/ standards of behaviour, every culture to culture
Culture relativism
Idea that all cultures and cultural practices have equal value
Mores
Violation of a moral code
Counter cultures
against the norms of society
Subcultures
A self-defining group with an society which holds different values and norms to those of the majority
Consumerism
The tendency to define ourselves in terms of the goods and services we purchase, and motivated to purchase by a barrage of advertising
Sanction
a social reaction of approval or disapproval in response to someone’s actions
Social control
Through which society maintains order and cohesion
Folkways
The learned behaviour, shared by a social group
Caste
The segmental division of stratification in society acquired by birth
Rite of passage
Cultural ceremonies that mark the transition from one stage to another
Values
Ideas of what’s right/wrong. Good/bad
Symbols
General ideas that carry particular meaning
