CHAPTER 4 - SCREW THREADS Flashcards
FASTENERS AND THREADS
What is a advantage of threaded fasteners (unlike rivets and pins)?
They are able to be disassembled and reassembled an almost infinite number of times
TOLERANCES AND CLASSES OF FIT
What does the letter ‘A’ and ‘B’ on a thread mean?
What must they be the same of, in order to be partners?
Letter A: Male threads (external)
Letter B: Female threads (internal)
They must be the same class in order to be partners.
TOLERANCE AND CLASSES OF FIT
How many classes of fit are there?
5
TOLERANCES AND CLASSES OF FIT
Describe the type of fit each class is…
Give examples if possible
Class 1: loose fit -> turn with your fingers (wing nuts)
Class 2: free fit -> used for most commercial applications
Class 3: medium fit -> used for closer tolerances (suitable for high-performance precision applications)
Class 4: close fit -> not often used (requires the application of high torque for semi-permanent assembly)
Class 5: tight fit -> not often used (same as Class 4)
TOLERANCES AND CLASSES OF FIT
What class of fit are aircraft bolts manufactured in?
Almost always Class 3, medium fit.
THREAD FORMS AND DIMENSIONS
Match the letters with the key features in the diagram below..
-Root -Crest -Major Diameter -Pitch -Depth -Minor Diameter -Angle -Form (Profile) -Root -Crest
State with side is the ‘A’ and which is the ‘B’
A: Depth
B: Minor Diameter
C: Crest
D: Root
E: Major Diameter
F: Root
G: Angle
H: Form (Profile)
I: Crest
J: Pitch
LEFT SIDE = Internal (Female) B RIGHT SIDE = External (Male) A
THREAD FORMS AND DIMENSIONS
What are the 3 forms of Power transmission threads in common use?
- Square Thread
- ACME Thread
- Buttress Thread
TOLERANCE AND CLASSES OF FIT
Which fit is a general purpose thread?
Class 2 - free fit
THREAD FORMS AND DIMENSIONS
Which thread takes loads in one direction only?
HINT: it is commonly found in bench vices which have quick release jaws
Buttress threads can only take axial loads in one direction
THREAD FORMS AND DIMENSIONS
Describe the differences of ACME thread and buttress threads, from a square thread…
ACME Thread: Similar to a square thread however, they have sloping faces.
Buttress Thread: They form a triangle with one face at 90 degrees and the other at 45 degrees
THREA FORMS AND DIMENSIONS
Which thread may be a multi start?
ACME thread
UNIFIED THREAD SYSTEM
Why was the Unified Thread System created?
To fulfil the need for interchangeability of threaded products
UNIFIED THREAD SYSTEM
Name the three unified threads used in the aerospace industry?
UNC: Unified Coarse
UNF: Unified Fine
UNJF: Unified Fatigue Resistant Fine Thread
UNIFIED THREAD SYSTEM
How is a unified thread specified?
AFTER FIRST QUESTION: What is the nominal diameter dependant on?
By its nominal diameter and its pitch (number of threads per inch or TPI)
Dependant on the diameter of the shank on which it is cut
UNIFIED THREAD SYSTEM
What does the letter ‘j’ mean on a unified thread?
The thread is fatigue resistant
