CHAPTER 10 - AIRFRAME HUSBANDY Flashcards
PAINT REMOVAL
What procedures should be carried out when doing paint removal?
Include what to do if it comes in contact with your skin or eyes
- Apply a barrier cream to the hands and all skin that the materials may touch
- Do not let the material touch your skin or eyes
- Put PVC protective clothes and chemical proof eye protection on
- If material touch your skin: flush out immediately with clean cold water - if skin is red or burning, seek medical aid
- If materials get into your eyes, flush out immediately with clean cold water for NO LESS than 10 minutes. Get medical aid immediately
- Make sure your work area has a good air flow
- Do not breathe in the fumes
PAINT REMOVAL
Paint removers contain chlorinated-hydrocarbons, what are they mixed with in small quantities?
Solvents, thickeners, wetting agents, corrosion inhibitors and wax
PAINT REMOVAL
Why is wax mixed into paint removers?
Decrease the rate at which the paint remover evaporates - helps keep solvents against the paint layer for longer
PAINT REMOVAL
What is used to help seal joint/surfaces that the materials could cause damage?
With masking tape
PAINT REMOVAL
What is the maximum time paint remover can be left on the surface?
1 hour
PAINT REMOVAL
What three things effects how long a paint remover takes?
- The number of layers of paint being removed
- The length of time since the paint was applied
- The type of paint
PAINT REMOVAL
What area is someone of Depth A allowed to remove up to?
0.1m squared
PAINT REMOVAL
Depth B, C and D can be done by a specialist trained paint and finisher tradesman who must hold a minimum of what?
Authority level B
CLEANING OF SURFACES
What document is look at to clarify which chemical is used for cleaning?
Aircraft Document Set
RESTORATION OF A DAMAGED SURFACE FINISH
What does SF mean?
Surface Finish
RESTORATION OF A DAMAGED SURFACE FINISH
Give a small description of the following chemicals:
1. Alocrom 1200
2. Etch Primers
3. Epoxy primers and fillers
- Alocrom 1200: Two-part solution. Process is the local treatment of aluminium and their alloys to repair a damaged anodic layer. Makes them more corrosion resistant and paint bond better
- Etch Primers: Procedure roadies instruction on how to use water-repellent etch-primer. Gives metals a corrosion-resistant layer. Good base for an epoxy primer, a finish paint or a soluble nylon\
- Epoxy Primers and Fillers: Procedure for how to use the green two-part chromates epoxy-primers. Primers are resistant to water and ester lubricants.
RESTORATION OF A DAMAGED SURFACE FINISH
What materials are epoxy primers and fillers used on?
Magnesium Alloy
Aluminium Alloy
Copper based alloy
Steel
Glass Fibre reinforced plastic
AIRCRAFT DECALS
Why are decals used?
Highlight safety information, danger areas, operation of handles/catches
Indicate refuelling points
Print oil/grease types adjacent to the components requiring them
AIRCRAFT DECALS
Decals are elastomeric. What does this mean?
they can stretch and Alex with the airframe without tearing
AIRCRAFT DECAALS
Where should Gloss decals be applied? Where should Matt decals be applied?
Gloss: onto a gloss or acrylic finish
Matt: to a matt or eggshell finish
