Chapter-4 Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
What makes up the musculoskeletal system?
Bones, joints, and muscles
What do your bones, joints, and muscles do together?
They move you, protect you, and give your body support.
Describe the steps of the formation of bones.
1) Bones start as cartilage
2) Blood vessels penetrate the cartilage and
3) Bone cells (osteocytes) begin the process of replacing the cartilage model with actual bone
Describe the time frame of bone formation.
Bone making process begins well before you are born and does not finish until puberty ends.
In which direction do the bones harden?
Many bones harden from the center outward.
Some bones, however, grow at special growth centers called epiphyseal plate (aka growth plate).
What is the growth plate of the bone called?
Epiphyseal plate
What is the area between the end of the bone (epiphysis) and the long shaft of the bone (diaphysis).
