Chapter 4 (Enzymes) Flashcards
What is the temperature coefficient?
The temperature coefficient (Q10) is how much the rate of reaction increases with a 10 degree rise in temperature. In enzymes it is taken as about 2.
What are the two types of inhibitors?
Competitive and non competitive inhibitors
How do competitive inhibitors work?
Competitive inhibitors have a similar shape to the enzymes normal substrate, so ‘competes’ for the active site.
Most are temporary, but some are permanent such as aspirin.
How do non-competitive inhibitors work?
Non-competitive inibitors bind to the enzyme at the allosteric site (any site which isnt the active site). This changes the enzymes structure, therefore the substrate will not fit into the active site.
