Chapter 10 (Classification and Evolution) Flashcards
What are the 6 kingdoms?
Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protoctista, Eubacteria and Archaebacteria
What are the 3 domains?
Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya
What are the differences between the 3 domains?
• Eukarya- have 80s ribosomes and RNA polymaerase contains 12 proteins
• Archaea- have 70s ribosomes and RNA polymerase can have 8-10 proteins
• Bacteria- have 70s ribosomes and RNA polymerase contains 5 proteins
What does autotrophic mean?
Autotrophic means that an organism acquires nutrients by photosynthesis
What does heterotrophic mean?
Heterotrophic means that an organism ingests other organisms
What does saprophytic mean?
Saprophytic means that an organism gains its nutrients by absorption
What order does the taxonomic hierarchy go in? (Using a European Badger as an example)
Domain- Eukaryote
KIngdom- Animalia
Phylum- Chordata
Class- Mammalia
Order- Carnivora
Family- Mustelidae
Genus- Meles
Species- Meles
What causes hybrids such as mules to be infertile?
They have an odd number of chromosomes (Mules contain 63 chromosomes)
What is an analogous structure?
Analogous structures are body parts which perform the same function but have a different genetic origin
