What is Asthma?
A chronic lung condition with inflammation, constriction of the airways, and difficulty breathing.
The worsening of Asthma symptoms usually occurs after what?
The exposure to factors known as triggers.
What are the categories of common Asthma triggers?
Allergens, Respiratory Infections, Irritants and Physical Activity.
What type of triggers does Allergens have?
Dust mites, pollen, mold, cockroaches and pet dander.
What type of triggers does Respiratory Infections have?
Colds, flu, and bronchitis.
What type of triggers does Irritants have?
Tobacco smoke, air pollution and strong odors.
What type of triggers does Physical Activity has?
Exercise-induced asthma.
What is the goal of Asthma treatments?
To avoid the substances that trigger symptoms and control the airway inflammation.
What are the two types of medicine that most people with Asthma take?
Long-term controller and Short-acting or Rescue medications.
How are Long-Term Controller medications taken?
On the a daily basis, even when there are no symptoms.
What does Long-Term Controller medications do?
Keep Asthma symptoms under control.
How are Long-Term Controller medications are delivered or taken?
By an inhaler, injection or taken as a tablet.
How are Short-Acting or Rescue medications taken?
As needed at the first sign of an Asthma attack to dilate the airways to make breathing easier.
How are Short-Acting or Rescue medications delivered or taken?
With a metered dose inhaler.
