Chapter 4: Chronic Obstructive Chapter 4: Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Flashcards
What means COPD?
Choric Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
What is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)?
A condition marked by progressive destruction of the air sacs in the lungs and loose of respiratory membrane for oxygen exchange.
What does the damage of COPD leads to?
Shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing and fatigue.
Does the symptoms of COPD can be completely eliminated?
No, the symptoms cannot be completely eliminated with treatment and the condition continues to worsen over time.
What are the two conditions that COPD includes?
Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema.
What is Chronic Bronchitis?
Inflammation of the bronchial tubes.
What is Emphysema?
Destruction of the air sacs.
Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema are most often caused by what?
Long term smoking.
What is the name of the Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) that measures airway obstruction?
Spirometry and is required to diagnose COPD.
What does the Spirometry test measures?
How fast and how much air a person can blow out of the lungs.
What would be the next step if the measurement of the Spirometry test is abnormal?
Repeat the test after the use of an inhaled bronchodilator.
What would be the measurements when people with Asthma take Spirometry test?
The result will usually return to normal.
What would be the measurements when people with COPD take Spirometry test?
The results may only partially improve from people with Asthma.
Is there a cure for COPD?
Currently there is no cure for COPD, but there are many treatments available for the symptoms and complications of this disorder.
