Why is the systematic assessment of adaptive behavior important?
It is needed to determine the support that people with ID need in everyday life

Consists of a series of questions answered by someone familiar with the individual.
Why is adaptive behavior hard to be proven?
Not all situations are appropriate in different groups.
What is adaptive behavior?
Consists of social practical skills and conceptual skills that people need in everyday life

The American Association on Intellectural and Developmental disabilities.
What was the traditional method of classifying intellectual disabilities?
Determined by an IQ score: Mild, moderate, severe and profound.
What is the modern classification of intellectual disabilities?
Most still use the same four descriptors but base their classification on a person’s adaptive behavior than an IQ score.
What is significantly subaverage?
When an IQ score falls 2 or more below the standard deviations. This is about 2.3% of the population.
What is the IQ cut off score?
70

Mild Intellectual Disabilities:
only has trouble in school, normal social and communication skills. Likely to be independent or semi-independent.
Moderate disabilities
Developmental delays in preschool years.
Severe and Profound intellectual disabilities:
Identified at birth or shortly after, may have additional disabilities or health problems.
