What is LRE?
Least Restrictive Environment: Placement for students identified as having LD, where they are placed in a class that restricts them the least (No segregated from regular peers)
At-Risk
When a child that has not been identified with LD but has a great chance of having one without intervention
Handicap
A person with a disability that they encounter when interacting with the environment
Disability
Exists when an impairment limits a person’s ability to perform certain tasks the same way as everyone else.
Impairment
Reduced Function or loss of a particular body part/organ
Who are exceptional Children?
Those whose physical attributes and/or learning abilities differ from the norm either above or below
What is SAS?
College and Universities aren’t required by law to give student accommodations when it comes to LD
How many exceptional children are there?
About 6.4 million children with disabilities ages three through 21 years received special-education services and 2011 through 2012
About what percent of special education students are there in the school age population?
Children with special education represents approximately 13% of the school-age population
What are the two largest disability categories?
Learning disabilities and Speech or Language Impairments. They make up 56% of all school-aged special education students.
During what time were schools allowed to deny education to exceptional children?
1970
What year was the supreme court case Brown vs. The board of education and what was decided?
- The supreme US court declared that education must be made available to all children on equal terms.
What’s an FAPE?
Free appropriate public education
What course case decided that children with disabilities were entitled to FAPE and that they were to be placed in regular public schools?
Class action lawsuit PARC 1972.
What is Due Process?
Where parents have a right to due process under the law which means they have the right to be notified of any decisions affecting their child’s educational placement.
What does IDEA stand for and when was it founded?
Individuals with disabilities education act. Founded by Congress in 1975 amended And reauthorized and 2004
What are the six major principles of IDEA?
1) Zero Reject
2) Non-discriminatory identification and evaluation
3) Free appropriate public education
4) LRE
5) Procedural safeguards
6) Parent participation and shared decision-making
