what are collective rights? what three groups do they affect?
rights guaranteed to specific groups of ppl.
- first nations, metis, language groups
language groups refer to ANGLOPHONES and FRANCOPHONES
what are the numbered treaties?
agreements to share land in exchange for stuff (healthcare, education, etc)
why did canada sign the numbered treaties? why did the FNs sign?
FNs had no choice –were low on resources and would die if they didnt sign
canada govt wanted to sign –build railway and have settlers all around canada
what was the indian act? its purpose?
first act abt indigenous status and ‘rights’
it offered a choice for FN:
1) be a status indian and get stuff from numbered treaties [cant vote]
2) be canadian citizen but cant practice culture
main purpose was to assimilate first nations
what does “Official Bilingualism” mean?
federal affairs can be conducted in French and English
what are minority language education rights?
minority languages of sufficent size in any province has the right to publicly funded schools in their language
what is the manitoba school act?
manitoba banned public funding for catholic schools–made manitoba english-only
what are the two things included in Bill 101?
1) signs had to be in french only
2) french immigrants send their kid to french school

what was the result? did fighting occur?
HBC sold Red River Settlement to Canada and Metic resisted bc they felt they shouldve been informed
