Chapter 37: Rotavirus & Norovirus Flashcards
Describe Reoviridae (Rotavirus)
double layered capsid (some properties of enveloped virus during replication, but really a naked capsid), segments of ds RNA, it is symptomatic in children, but usually not adults.
How is the rotavirus created
By genetic reassortment: causes nonhuman rotavirus strains to express human rotavirus antigens on their surface.
Describe the two Rotavirus vaccines
1) RotaTeq- Live oral vaccine, contains 5 reassortant rotavirus.
2) Rotarix- Love oral vaccine, monovalent, live attenuated human vaccine strand.
Describe Calciviridae (norovirus)
linear positive sense sing stranded RNA. Not developed.
Describe the symptoms and treatment of Norovirus
contagious and usually food borne. short incubation period of 12-48 hours and usually lasts 24-60 hours. causes watery non bloody diarrhea. treatment is just to rehydrate.
describe Adenovirus
not enveloped, double stranded linear DNA.
Illness caused by Adenovirus
Respiratory illness- cold, pneumonia, croup.
Acute respiratory illness.
