Characteristics of Rhabdoviridae (+/- sense, enveloped/non env., etc)
Negative sense single stranded enveloped RNA.

Where does multiplication occur?
At the bite site and in the brain tides, which causes encephalitis
How are animals diagnosed?
Direct fluorescent Ab test of brain tissue
How are humans diagnosed?
detection of Ag and Ab in saliva, serum, and spinal fluid
Pre exposure prophylaxis
Inactivated whole virus
Post exposure prophylaxis
Local treatment of the wound. Passive immunization (ab) or the Active (inactivated whole virus)

Risk assessment for dog, cat, ferrets
if healthy and available, observe for 10 days and don’t vaccinate until signs are shown in animal.
Risk assessment for raccoon, skunk, fox, etc
Give PEP unless proven negative by the lab
