Chapter 36-Force And Work Flashcards
Name six types of force.
Pushing, pulling, gravity, compression, friction, tension, stretching, weight, electric and magnetic forces.
What is a force?
A force is something which causes and object to accelerate or to change velocity.
What is force measured in?
It is measured in Newtons. (N)
What can force be measured in?
A spring balance or a Newton-meter.
What does gravity do?
It exerts a downward pull on all objects.
How would you calculate weight?
Weight (in newtons)=mass (in kilograms) ✖️ 10
What is friction?
Friction is a force which always tries to resist movement between any two objects in contact.
What is a way of reducing the effects of friction?
Using a lubricant. (Oil.)
What objects are elastic?
Objects which return to their original shape when the altering force is removed are said to be elastic.
Name Hooke’s law.
The extension of a spring is directly proportional to to the force that is stretching it.
When is work done?
Work is only done when force moves an object.
Name the equation for work done.
Work done= force ✖ ️distance moved.
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work.
What unit is work done measured in?
It is measured in joules (J), also the unity of energy.
What is power?
Power in the rate of doing work. It is the work done per unit time. It is also the energy used per unit time.
