Chapter 15- Plant Reproduction Flashcards
What is reproduction?
Being able to produce new individuals of the same kind.
What are the 2 types of reproduction?
Sexual, asexual.
Secrete asexual reproduction.
Only involves one parent, new individuals are identical to the parent. Ex. Strawberry
Describe sexual reproduction.
Involves to parents and male, female sex cells. Fertilisation occurs. Ex. Humans
What is fertilisation?
The fusion of male and female gametes to produce a zygote.
What are the two main parts of the structure of a flower?
Male organs are stamens, female organs are carpels.
What are the functions of sepals, petals, stamens, carpels?
Sepals- protect flower before it blooms.
Petals- attract insects to the flower.
Stamens- produce pollen grains containing male gametes.
Carpels- produce the eggs.
Describe a stamen. (2)
Male part of flower.
Consists of filament (stalk) and anther ( produces pollen grains.)
Describe a carpel. (2)
Female part of flower.
Consists of stigma (where pollen lands), style (connects stigma to ovary), ovary (contains ovules, which produce the eggs)
What are the 5 stages of sexual reproduction in plants?
- Pollination.
- Fertilisation.
- Seed and fruit formation.
- Seed and fruit dispersal.
- Germination.
What is pollination?
The transfer of pollen from the stamen to the carpel either by wind or insect.
What is fertilisation?
Fusion between male and female game test to produce a zygote.
What are the 4 parts of a seed?
Testa, plumule, radicle, food supply.
What is germination?
The growth of a seed into a new plant.
Conditions for germination.
Water, oxygen, correct temperature.
