Chapter 35 - Area, Volume, Density, Speed, Velocity & Acceleration Flashcards
What is the formula for the area of a rectangle and a triangle?
Rectangle: Length by Width. (l x w)
Triangle: Half it’s base by its perpendicular height.
Circle: 3.14 by (radius) squared.
What is area?
The amount of surface enclosed by its boundaries.
What is the volume of an object?
The amount of space it take up.
How is the volume of a cuboid found?
Length x Width x Height (l x w x h)
How is the volume of a liquid found?
By using a graduated cylinder. They should be read at eye level at the bottom of the meniscus.
What are burettes and pipettes used for?
Transferring definite amounts of water.
How is the volume of an irregular shape measured?
By the volume of the liquid it pushes out.
What is volume measure in?
Centimetres or metres cubed.
What is density?
The mass of a unit divided by the volume of it.
density = mass/volume
What is density measured in?
g/cm squared or kg/cm squared
How do you find the density of an object?
- find the mass of the substance
- find the volume of the substance
- divide the mass of the substance by its volume
How do objects float?
If they are less dense than that liquid.
What is speed?
The distance an object will travel per unit of time.
average speed = distance travelled/time taken
What is velocity?
Speed in any given direction.
What is acceleration?
The rate of change in speed.
acceleration= final speed - initial speed/time taken
