Chapter 2 - Living Things Flashcards
What is an organism?
Another name for a living thing.
What is Biology?
The study of living things.
What are living things made of?
Cells.
What are the 7 characteristics of living things?
- Movement
- Reproduction
- Sensitivity
- Growth
- Respiration
- Excretion
- Nutrition
What is movement?
The ability to move from place to place or from one position to another. Eg. An animal running/a flower opening its petals.
What is reproduction?
The ability to produce new individuals of the same kind, whether it be sexual or asexual.
What is sensitivity?
The ability to react to changes in the environment. Eg. Moving your hand off a hot object/a plant growing towards the sun
What is growth?
When organisms grow, their cells divide.
What is respiration?
The way living things get energy, from taking in food and oxygen, and then releasing energy, carbon dioxide and water.
What is excretion?
The way living things remove waster from their bodies.
What is nutrition?
The way in which living things get their food.
What are the general features of plants?
Roots, a stem and leaves. Some plants also have flowers, cones, fruit and seeds.
Why are plants important to humans?
- they produce food for themselves and other living things
- they provide shelter for animals
- they provide useful materials to humans such a linen, cotton, medicines and dyes
- they take in carbon dioxide, which helps with global warming
What are the main features of animals?
Eyes, ears, hair, fur, legs, wings, a shell, fins, gills etc.
What two groups are animals divided into, and what is the difference between them?
- Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone, eg. Humans, llamas, fish
- Invertebrates do not have backbones eg. Insects, octopi, crabs
