Chapter 33 -1 Flashcards
Sponges are in what phylum?
porifera
What are the characteristics of porifera?
7000 marine species
sessile adults
swimming larvae
What are the 3 layers of the sponge/porifera?
outer epidermis
mesohyle
spongocoel
What happens in the outer epidermis?
water enters via incurrent ostia & exits through the osculum
What happens in the mesohyle?
middle gelatinous matrix containing amebocytes, spicules, and spongin
What happens in spongocoel?
inner layer lined with flagellated chaonocytes (collar cells) that circulate water
What are the 2 types of cells of porifera/sponges?
collar cells
amoebocytes
What are collar cells?
flagellated chaonocytes with feeding collars that circulate water
What are amoebocytes?
cells that move with pseudopods, clean pores, and secrete spicules & spongin
