Chapter 3.2: Better Job Prospects - The Javanese and the Baweanese Flashcards
Why were the labourers from other parts of the Malay Archipelago, such as the Javanese and Baweanese attracted to come to Singapore?
Because of the higher wages. In the 1920s, wages for unskilled labourers in Java were extremely low, especially for work in sugarcane plantations. Thus, many people in Java were drawn to work in Singapore instead.
What did the many Javanese and Baweanese come to Singapore to work as?
Plantation labourers, drivers, general traders and sailors.
Why were many Javanese writers and Javanese publishers also attracted to Singapore?
Because they could write and print their news articles and stories in Singapore without being restricted by Dutch laws.
What was life for the peasants and fishermen in Bawean like?
They had at best one single sarong to wear and could change clothes once a week. They had enough food though as their land’s production was sufficient / enough and in addition, they could go fishing after the rice harvest and then make extra money. However, this did not give them the same income as their village mates who returned from Singapore. They came back wearing splendid clothes and also brought presents back for their relatives, which the peasants and fishermen in Bawean would never manage to do at home.
Why did the Baweanese prefer going to Singapore to find work there?
To make more money so that they too can buy nice clothes and things.
