What happened to China after the Qing Dynasty collapsed in 1911?
China entered a period of warlordism in the 1920s where different army generals took control of different parts of China. Civil war followed in 1930s between two major groups: the Guomindang forces and the Communist Red Army.
What is ‘Warlordism’?
A period where powerful leaders fight for control over a very large area and have large personal armies that are loyal to them instead of the country.
What is ‘civil war’?
A war between two or more groups of people belonging to the same country.
What happened throughout the 1910s to the 1930s in China?
Constant wars between different political parties and among independent warlord armies.
How did the different political parties and independent warlord armies try to expand their armies?
Through forced conscription of the people living in the areas these political parties and warlord armies controlled.
What did all these violence and unrest drive many China in China to do?
Look for better opportunities elsewhere.
How were the soldiers of the Red Army recognised?
By a red armband.
What did the Red Army soldiers go around doing?
Killing bandits and landowners.
How did some people take advantage of the presence of the Red Army?
By pretending to be from the Red Army and thus using the opportunity / chance to kill their enemies.
Describe a typical night under the rule of the Red Army.
Gunshots and screams for help could be heard. Also, people were being arrested almost everyday.
Give two reasons why people decided to leave China.

No.
What happened to the conscripted young men?
They had their hands tied up with wire and were used to extort money from their family members.
