When did the Europeans begin to expand their influence into Asia?
In the 15th century.
What was the consequence / result of establishing Singapore as a trading settlement in 1819?
Many groups of people from all over the world came to Singapore. This coming of these groups of people to Singapore was, in fact, part of a huge wave of migration that took place across the world in the 19th century.
What is migration?
Migration generally refers to the physical movement of large groups of people, known as migrants, over long distances.
What are the results / consequences of the migration process?
Many interactions and cultural exchanges between different communities.
Why is the USA a country with a rich immigrant history?
Because it is made up of immigrants who came from different parts of the world to work and live there over time.
Why did the Irish move in big groups to the United States from 1845 to 1850?
Due to the potato famine in Ireland from 1845 to 1850.
Why did the Jews move in large numbers to the USA in the 19th century?
Because of / Due to persecution and a lack of economic opportunities where they lived.

What was St John’s Island used as in the 1880s?
As a quarantine centre and to also house thousands of new immigrants to Singapore who suffered from diseases such as cholera.
