ferrous sulfate (Feosol) for iron deficiency anemia
A
Iron supplement
Patients generally respond quickly
get regular hct/hgb labs done
- During IV be careful to prevent infiltration
- Use z track in IM
- Don’t take PO within 1hour bedtime
AE:
- GI upsets
- Taking food will be easier on stomach, but less absorption
- 1hr before or 2hr after meals
- Constipation
- black box: Overdoses of iron are leading cause of fatal poisoning of children.

epoetin alfa (Epogen) pharmacotherapy
A
erythropoietin
Treats disorders caused by deficiency in RBC formation
Counteracts anemia caused by chemo drugs
Usually subQ due to lower doses normally needed
Don’t shake vial
AE:
- HTN
- Black box*: CV and thromboembolic event risk increased. TIA, MI, and strokes have occurred in those with CKD and on dialysis. Use lowest dose possible in those with cancer (can promote tumor progression)

filgrastim (Neupogen) for neutropenia
A
Colony stimulating factor
Inc. neutrophil production in marrow, enhance existing neutrophils.
Used to shorten neutropenia in those taking antineoplastic drugs.
Used for AIDS, transplants
Admin subQ
Target 1,500-10,000 cells/mm^3
-*Don’t admin within 24 hrs. before or after chemo
AE:
- Bone pain
- Take bloods continually (make sure not too many leukocytes)
