atorvastatin (Lipitor) for dyslipidemia

A

Statin
Reduce lipids that can cause MI adn stroke.

Inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, increase lipid/LDL absorption.

Administer with food
Can take at any time

AE:

  • GI complaints
  • Rhabdo

cholestyramine (Questran) for dyslipidemia

A

Bile acid sequestrant

Powder mixed w/ fluid
1 or 2 times per day

Binds with bile acids and is excreted in feces

Mix w/ 60-180mL water and have patient drink immediately

Give other drugs 2 HRS BEFORE OR 4 HRS AFTER

AE:
-GI issues

Contraindications:
-Biliary obstructions
