Chapter 30 Flashcards
1
Q
procainamide (Pronestyl) for cardiac dysrhythmia
A
Sodium channel blockers
Blocks sodium ion channels-> slows conduction of action potential.
- **SUPINE DURING IV
- black box*: Prolonged use may result in increased antinuclear antibodies. Lupus-like syndrome in 30-50% of patients taking drug over a year. Reserve for life threatening dysrhythmias. Blood diseases may occur within first 3 months.
2
Q
propranolol (Inderal) for dysrhythmias
A
beta adrenergic antagonist
reduces HR, conduction velocity, lower BP
Reduces tachycardia
Abrupt discontinuation can cause MI, mega HTN, dysrhythmias
Don’t take if BPM under 60
Black box: Abrupt withdrawal can worsen ischemic heart disease. Reduce dosage over 1-2 weeks.
3
Q
verapamil (Calan) for dysrhythmias
A
Calcium channel blockers
calcium inhibition stabilizes dysrhythmias
-*Make sure drug is clear and colorless before admin
Patients with HF should be carefully monitored
Use caution with digoxin
