What was Yalta?
Russia had had great successes in WWII and the US and other Allied powers were behind by comparison and not even close to defeating Japan
Along with Teheran- Churchill and Roosevelt agreed to divide Germany along a north-south line- giving Soviet troops the power to liberate Eastern Europe in their own way

Truman insisted on immediate free elections in Eastern Europe - Stalin refused

How did Soviet policies change directly after WWII and why?
Stalin- returned the USSR to the totalitarianism, focusing on heavy industry, reestablishing tight control of culture, and purging millions- exported his system to others in Eastern Europe (industrialization and collectivization)
Only Tito in Yugoslavia remained independent from Stalin
Who came after Stalin and what did he do?
Khrushchev- liberation/de-stalinization
Communist Party Congress- exposed Stalin’s crimes and purges
From heavy industry to consumer goods and agriculture- more responsive to Soviet consumers
