A supply of piped water for human consumption that has at least 15 service connections or serves 25 or more persons 60 or more days each year.
Public Water System (PWS)
A new chemical compound formed by the reaction of disinfectants with organic compounds in water.
At high concentrations, many of these are considered a danger to human health.
Disinfection By-Products (DBPs)
The product of the residual disinfectant concentration C, in milligrams per liter, and the corresponding disinfectant contact time T, in minutes.
Minimum values are specified by the Surface Water Treatment Rule as a means of ensuring adequate kill or inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms in water.
