Chapter 15 - Corrosion Control Flashcards
The gradual deterioration or destruction of a substance or material by chemical action.
The action proceeds inward from the surface.
Corrosion
Metal deposits left in pipelines and plumbing fixtures.
Scaling
The water treatment process intended reduce the corrosive or scale-forming tendencies of water.
Stabilization
A knob of rust formed on the interior of cast-iron pipes as a result of corrosion.
Tubercule
Rust-colored water resulting from the formation of ferric hydroxide from iron naturally dissolved in the water or from the action of bacteria.
Red Water
A form of localized corrosion that can form deep pits and tubercules.
Concentration Cell Corrosion
A form of localized corrosion caused by the connection of dissimilar metals in an electrolyte, such as water.
Galvanic Corrosion
The point at which water can no longer dissolve any more of a particular chemical.
Precipitation of the chemical will occur beyond this point.
Saturation Point
