the largest and most well known computer network linking millions of computers all over the world
ARPANET
created by the US department of defense advanced research projects agency (ARPA) to allow researchers located in different places to communicate with each other.
initially connected four super computers and enabled researchers at a few dozen academic institutions to communicate with each other and with government agencies.
this was designed so that even if a portion of the paths was destroyed the others would still work
ISP
internet service provider
a business or other organization that provides internet access to others typically for a fee
Internet content provider
a person or an organization that provides internet content
eg a photographer who posts samples of her best work on the web
a software company that creates a web site to provide product information and software downloads

application service providers
a company that manages and distributes software based services over the internet

1996 Telecommunications Act
This act deregulated the entire communication industry so that telephone companies, cable TV and satellite operators were free to enter each other’s markets.

Internet corporation for assigned names and numbers
The function of this is for coordinating activities related to the internets naming system, such as IP address allocation and domain name management
What is the World Wide Web consortium (W3C)?
It is an international community of over 450 organizations dedicated to developing protocols and specifications to be used with the web to ensure its interoperability.

Why is the myth “someone controls the internet” not true?
No single group controls the internet. Governments try to control the content on the internet within their borders but use of third parties to post items makes it difficult

Technically the internet is the physical network and the web is the collection of web pages
What is a dial up connection?
A type of internet connection in which the computer or other device must dial via a telephone line to connect to the service providers computer then connect to the internet
What is a direct connection?
A type of internet connection in which the computer or other device is connected to the internet continually
What is a conventional dial up internet access?
Dial up connection via a standard telephone line. Advantages cheaper but disadvantage is slow connection speed.
What is Cable internet access?
Fast direct internet access via cable tv lines
What is DSL internet access?
Digital subscriber line
It is fast direct internet line via telephone lines

What is Satellite internet access?
Fast direct internet access via airwaves and satellite dish
What is fixed wireless internet access?
Fast direct internet access via airwaves note only available in some areas. These use radio transmission towers
What is broadband over fibre?
Very fast connection via fibre optic networks
Short form is BoF internet access.
What is mobile wireless internet access
Internet via mobile phone network
What is a Wi-Fi hotspot?
A location that provides wireless internet access to the public

A website designed to help users search for web pages that match keywords or selected categories
Eg google yahoo etc
What is a search engine?
A software program used by a search site to retrieve matching we page from a search database
What is a keyword search?
A type of internet search that keywords are typed in to locate info on the internet
What is a directory search?
A type of internet search where categories are selected to locate information on the internet.
Eg a list of categories are presented and you select the one that best matches what you want
What is a phrase search?
Using more than one word for an internet search
What are Boolean Operators?
In an internet search you use the words such as AND, OR and NOT
if you want your documents to find both keywords you use AND and if you want searches to come up with either keywords you use OR
How do you properly cite internet resources?
you need to reference:
author
date of publication and article or webpage title
along with retrieved statement listing the date the article was retrieved from the internet and the url of the web page used.
What is instant messaging?
a way of exchanging real time typed messages other individuals also called chat
What is text messaging?
a way of exchanging real typed messages with other individuals via a cellular network and typically cellphones
What is twittering?
sending short status updates about your current activities via twitter service
some refer to it as microblogging
short updates up to 140 characters are called tweets
messages can be sent via text updates or IM or email and posted to members twitter acct
message boards
a web page that enables individuals to post messages on a particular topic for others to read and respond to also called a discussion group or online forum.

Voice over Internet Protocol
The process of placing telephone calls vial the internet

refers to the use of computers or mobile devices, video camera, microphones etc to conduct face to face interactive meetings between people in different locations.

A face to face meeting taking place via the web; typically uses video cameras and microphones to enable participants to see and hear each other

A site that enables a community of individuals to communicate and share information.

buying products over the internet

and online activity where bids are places for items and the highest bidder purchases the item

A tool used to deliver selected Web content to subscribers as the content is published to a web site

A recorded audio or video file that can be played or downloaded via the web

Instructions delivered on and individual basis via the web
What is distance learning?
A learning environment in which the student is physically located away from the instructor and other students; commonly instructions and communications take place via the web.
What is a blog?
A web page that contains short, frequently updated entries in chronological order, typically by just one individual
What is a wiki?
A collaborative web page that is designed to be edited and republished by a variety of individuals.
What is an e-portfolio?
A collection of an individuals work accessible via the web.
What is internet censorship?
in some countries the internet content is filtered by the government typically to hinder the spread of information from political opposition groups, to filter out subjects deemed offensive or to block information from sites that could endanger national security…etc.
What is the Communications decency act?
and act signed into law in 1996 and made it a criminal offence to distribute patently indecent or offensive materials online in order to protect children from being exposed to offensive material
What is the CIPA?
Children’s internet protection act
This legislation is designed to protect children from inappropriate web content. It requires public libraries and schools to implement internet safety policies and technologies to block children’s access to inappropriate web content in order to receive public funds.
What is internet filtering?
the use of a software program or browser option to block access to particular web pages or types of webpages
What is a cookie?
a small file stored on a users hard drive by a web server; commonly used to identify personal preferences and setting for that user.
some people view cookies as an invasion of their privacy however websites can only read their own cookies
what is third party cookies?
cookies placed on your hard drive by a company other than the one associated with the web page that is being viewed.
These cookies target advertisements to web site visitors based on activities on the site.
What is spyware?
a software program that is installed without the users permission and that secretly gathers information to be sent to others
What is encrypted email?
email that is electronically scrambled.
Who has access to the email you send?
Typically your employer and your ISP have access to the emails you send through the organizations by archiving them in order to comply with subpoenas from law enforcement agencies.
