Chapter 3 - Reflexive Balance Flashcards
What is the first step to improving balance?
Being aware of how your body reacts when you try.
What does fear do to balance?
Causes stress and muscle tension, causing you to overcompensate.
What are primitive reflexes?
Knee-jerk reactions we experience in response to stimuli
What are equilibrium responses?
Body’s protection mechanisms when you are thrown off balance.
What is the term for knee-jerk reactions we experience in response to stimuli?
Primitive reflexes
What is the term for your body’s protection mechanisms when you are thrown off balance?
Equilibrium responses
How do muscles work in pairs/groups for balance? What is this term called?
One muscle contracts while the other releases and use “reciprocal inhibition” to control the stretch reflex.
What is the stretch reflex?
Muscle contraction to avoid over-stretching and tearing muscle fibers.
What is reciprocal inhibition?
One muscle contracting while the other relaxes.
