Canon
The official list of inspired books of the Bible. Catholics have 46 Old and 27 New Testament books.
Patriarchs
The “Fathers of Faith,” male rulers, elders, or leaders. Patriarchs of faith of Israel include Abraham, Isaac, Jacob.
Septuagint
An important Greek translation of the Old Testament. Name comes from latin word for 70. There were 700 scholars who translated the work in 72 days.
Aporcryphal Books
Greek word for hidden. Refers to pious literature related to Bible, but not in canon of the Bible. Examples are 1 Esdras and Book of Jubilees. Can also refer to several Old Testament Books that are considered inspired. Not part of Jewish canon but found in early Greek translations of Christian Old Testmament.
Dueterocanonical
Greek term for second canon. Refers to books in the Old Testament that weren’t found in Hebrew Scriptures. One example is Sirach or Wisdom.
The Pentateuch
The 5 books. Sacred and known as the Torah. They contain Jewish law and rules on belief and practice. They include Noah and Adam and Eve. They also provide Old Law.
The Historical Books
16 Books that narrate how the Chosen People lived out the Covenant in the Chosen Land. First 6 books have a style similar to Deuteronomy and describe how the Holy Land was conquered and settled and the desire to be King. The next 4 books have a POV from a priestly writer.
Wisdom Books
7 Books that contain some of the most beautiful and practical religious literature. Job(Book) deals with suffering and Good Vs. Evil. Psalms has hymns and prayers. The Song of Songs is an allegorical love song.
Prophetic Books
18 Books of prophets, powerful figures who spoke for YHWH warning people to be faithful. They were forceful reminders to stay faithful to God who loves justice and requires believers to live faithfully and compassionately.
