Literal Sense

Exegesis
The process used by scholars to discover the meaning of the biblical sense.
Vulgate
St. Jerome’s fifth century Latin translation of the bible into the common language of the people of his day.
Dead sea scrolls
Discovered in 1947 in caves near the Dead Sea, these manuscripts belonged to the Jewish essence sect, which lived in a monastery at Qumran. The scrolls contain essence religious documents, commentaries on certain Hebrew Scriptures, and ancient Old Testament manuscripts. They have proved very valuable to scholars in studying the Old Testament and for learning about some Jewish practices at the time of Jesus.
Church Father
A traditional title given to theologians of the first eight centuries whose teachings made a lasting mark on the Church.
Liturgy of the Hours
The prayer of the church; it is also known as the Divine Office. The Liturgy of the Hours utilizes the Scriptures, particularly the Psalms, for specific times of the day from early morning to later evening.
