Cultural Universals and Cultural Relativism
ethnocentrism - to use one’s own culture to evealuate other cultures, see thoer own culture as superior

The role of language in culture
- lang. is the most general + flexible form of culture
- lang. helps us express thoughts, feelings, ideas…
- structure of language influences how we experience the world
Subculture
a group that shares the cultural elements of a larger socitey but also have its own values, beliefs, norms… i.e., prison inmates, hockey fans, psychiatric patients
Counterculture
subculture that rejects conventional norms and values and adopts alternative ones
High culture
high income group preferences, tastes, and norms -> fine arts, classical music, ballet
-people do this to show they are cultured and have status
Popular culture
The culture of “ordinary people”; the objects, prefrences and tastes that are widespread in society -> music, fashion, media, film
Cultrual Capital
a body of knowledge used to get ahead in society, it includes learning about and taking part in high culture
i.e., good manners, knowing how to speak ab business, education, jobs, using proper utensils…
Cultural Literacy
having general knowedge about pop culture which allows you to communicate effecyivley with a member of society-> know stuff ab shakespeare, raptors, prime minister, video games…
Social capital
economic and noneconomic resources one gains from being part of a network of social relations
