Chapter 3 Key Terms Flashcards
Geosphere
Interior of earth, made up of rock
Hydrosphere
All of the water on the earths surface
Crust
Thinnest layer of the earths crust
Mantle
Layer beneath the crust, mostly rocks
Core
Innermost layer of the earth
Lithosphere
Cool rigid outer layer
Asthenosphere
Pliable and solid layer of rocks that move below the lithosphere
Tectonic Plates
The pieces of the lithosphere that are divided into pieces and shift around
Chemical Weathering
Wears down rocks and makes them smoother over time
Erosion
Transports the eroded material somewhere else
Atmopsphere
Mixture of gasses that surrounds the earth
Troposphere
Closest part of the atmosphere, where all of the weather comes from
Stratosphere
Temperature rises as altitude increases, above the troposphere
Ozone
molecule made up of 3 oxygen atoms, protects form harmful UV rays
Radiation
Transfer of energy in electromagnetic waves
Conduction
Transfer of heat from a warmer object to a colder object
Convection
Transfer of heat through air
Greenhouse effects
The process in which greenhouse gas absorbs and reradiates infrared radiation
Water cycle
how water gets recycled through rain, runoffs, evaporation etc
Evaporation
The way liquid gets turned to gas and brought up to the clouds
Condensation
Water vapor forming water droplets
Precipitation
rain falling from clouds
Salinity
Concentration of devolved salts in the ocean water
Fresh Water
3% of water on earth, most is locked up in icecaps
Biosphere
The narrow layer on the earths surface in which life cam exist
