Chapter 3 In respiratoy care equipment. Manufacture, storage and transport of medical gases. Flashcards
Air
A colorless orderless gas mixture that contains approximatley 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen , 1% of other gases.
CGA
Compressed Gas Association
What is the denisty of air?
1.29 kg/m3 at 21 degress celcius and 760 mm Hg.
How much of the earths atmosphere is oxygen.
20.9%
Liquefaction
Liquid air is air liquefied at -196°C at atmospheric pressure.
Fractional distillation
the separation of a mixture into its component parts, or fractions. Relies on the Joule-Kelvin effect.
Physical seperate of air
Accomplished with devices such as molecular sieves and semipermeable membranes to filter room air.
What is the denisty of CO2
1.833 kg/m3 at 21.1 degree celcuis and 1 atm.
At what temperature can CO2 Exist as a gas, solid and liquid
-56.6 degree celcius and a pressure of 60.4 psig
What is the name for CO2 if i goes below its tripple point.
Dry ice
What are the percentages in Carbon diociode - oxygen mixtures
5-10 % carbon dioide and 90-95% oxygen.
What is the density for Helium?
0.165 kg/m3 at 21.1 degree celcius at 1 atm
What is the maxium amount of Helium that can be obtained from natural gasses?
2%
What is the alternative way to produce Helium?
By heating urannium ore.
What is the percentages of heliox gas?
80% helium and 20% oxygen or 70;30 and 60;40
Nitric oxide
A colorless gas that has a slight mettalic order at room temperature. Powerful pulmonary vasodialotor
What is the density of nitiric oxide
1.245 kg/m3
Nitrous oxide
A potent anesthetic when aminstered in high concentrations.
What is the other name for nitrous oxide
Laughing gas.
What are compressed gas cylinders made out of?
Seamless high quality steel, chrome-molybdenum or aluminum.
Type 3AA cylingders
produced by heat treated high stenght steel.T
Type 3AL cylinders
Are constructed with specially prescribed seamless aluminum alloys.
Type 3 Cylinders
made of low carbon steel
The process of filling and refilling gas cyliders involves 4 steps
- Cylinder prefill inspection
- Cylinder filling
- Post fill procedures
- Appropraite documentation.
Respiratory Mainly use what kinds of cylinders
E and H types
When ae E cylinders typically used?
A source of oxygen in an emergency situtation. Found in Crash Carts
When are H cylinders typically used?
Primary method of storing oxygen and other medical gases.
What color are oxygen cylinders
White
What color are compressed air cylinders painted
Yellow or black and white
What is the color for oxygen tanks in the UNITED STATES
Green
What color is compressed air cylinfers in the United States?
Yellow.
What color are the CO2 cylinders in the United States
Grey
What are cylinder valves?
A control device that seals the contents of a compression cylinder
What are the parts of a cylinder valve
A chrome plated brass body
A thread inlet connector for attachment to the cylinder.
A stem that open and closes the cylinder
An outlet connection that allows for attachment of regulartors and pressure reducing valves.
A pressure relief valve
What is a direct acting valve.
contains two fiber washer amd teflon packaging to prevent gas leakage around the threads. can withstand over 1500 psi
What are diaphragm valves
Valves that use a threaded stem in place of packaging found on direct valves. Preferably better to use when pressure is lower that 1500 psi
What are the 3 pressure release valves called?
Rupture disk
fusible plugs
spring loaded devices
What is a rupture/ frangible disk?
A thin metal disk that ruptures or buckles when the pressure inside the pressure cylinder exceeds a certain limit.
What is a fusible plug?
Made of a metal alloy that melts when the temperature of the gas in the tank exceed the predetermined temperature.
What is a spring loaded device
Designed to release excessive cylinder pressure and reseal preventing further releas of gas from the cylinder.
THE ASSS
The American Standard Safety System
PISS
Pin Index Safety System
What is the formual used to estimate the duration of oxygen supply in a gas cylinder
Flow rate of gas (L/M) = Duration of flow in minutes
What is the threshold for a bulk oxygen system?
20,000 Cu ft
Thrope tube flowmeter
A Thorpe tube flowmeter, a type of variable-area flowmeter, or a rotameter, is an instrument used to directly measure the flow rate of a gas in medical instrument
Piston Compressors
Use the action of a motor driven piston to compress atmospheric air.
What is the volume pressure constant for the E tank
0.28
What is the volume pressure constant or the G tank
2.41
What is the volume pressure constant on the H and K tank
3.14
