CHAPTER 3, ENERGY SYSTEM (MIDTERM) Flashcards
what is the mass equivalent of ATP that is regenerated everyday?
50-75 kg
what are the dominants required for the energy system? (what do they rely on)
- rate on ATP
- total quality of ATP
- energy source used to replenish ATP
speed of action Is ______, amount of ATP replenished ________, and duration of action is _______, in the creatine phosphate system?
- very fast
- very small
- very short
speed of action Is ______, amount of ATP replenished ________, and duration of action is _______, in the anaerobic glycolysis system?
- fast
- small
- short
speed of action Is ______, amount of ATP replenished ________, and duration of action is _______, in the oxidative phosphorlyation system?
- very slow
- large
- long
what is creatinine?
- this is waste product that occurs from muscle breakdown.
- 1-2% of muscle creatine per day.
what does creatine kinase do?
- enzymes that breakdown ATP to phosphorylate creatine.
their are 2 main things that happens in PCr, what are they?
- localize within cells immediately.
- reversibility, either breakdown or develop PCr
aerobic regeneration depends on ________?
- mitochondrial creatine shuttle
during high intensity exercise, what happens with ATP and PCr?
ATP
- drops 20-40% then plateaus
PCr
- can be depleted by 80%+
- muscle fatigue is associated by decreased levels of PCr
what are the 2 types of ways that someone can supplement with creatine?
- short term overloading
- this is consuming a higher amount of creatine over a few days, which will lead to a plateau sooner. - long term gradual
- the plateau will happen around 30 days but is done in small amounts of creatine supplementation.
when choosing which one, it will depend on how much your body can absorb.
creatine supplementation has 2 variables that occurs, what are they?
- genetics
- dietary effects
- which come from the food we eat like meat and fish
