Social Cognition
the way ppl perceive themselves and the world
Automatic Thinking
nonconconscious, unintentional, involuntary, and effortless thinking
Schemas
mental organization of knowledge about the social world and the influence it has on our thinking
Accessibility
extent to which schemas and concepts are at front line of ppls minds and are therefore likely to be used when making judgements
Priming
a process where recent experiences increase the accessibility of a schema, trait, or concept
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
when we have an expectation abt what another person is like, which influences the way we act toward them, causing their behaviour to be consistent with what we think of them
Embodied Cognition
the process by which bodily sensations trigger mental structures such as schemas
Judgemental Heuristic
mental shortcuts ppl use to make judgments quick and efficiently
Availability Heuristic
mental shortcut where ppl base a judgement on the ease which they can bring info to mind
Representative Heuristic
mental shortcut where ppl classify smt according to how similar it is to a typical case
Base Rate Information
info abt the frequency of members of dif categories in the population
Analytic Thinking Style
a type of thinking in which ppl focus on the properties of objects without considering their surrounding context; this type of thinking is common in western cultures
Holistic Thinking Style
type of thinking in which ppl focus on the overall context, particularly the ways in which objects relate to one another
Controlled Thinking
thinking that is conscious, intentional, voluntary, and effortful
Counterfactual Thinking
mentally changing some aspect of the past as a way of imagining what might have been
