Chapter 3 Flashcards
Epidermis
Constist of several layers of stratified squamous epithelium.
- cells produced in basal layer
- cells pushed up flattened, fill up w/ keratin & die
- layers of packed dead cells accumulate in the outermost layer, where they are sloughed off.
Dermis
- Connective tissue layer
- Contains blood vessels, nerves
- Collagen fibers make the skin tough and elastic
Subcutaneous layer
Layer below the dermis
•composed of loose connective tissue & adipose tissue

Epithelium
Cells covering external and internal surfaces of the body
Epidermis
Squamous cell layer
thin outer layer of the skin
Flat, scale-like epithelial cells comprising outermost epidermis
Basal layer of epidermis Contains what cells?
Deepest layer of epidermis
- contains melanocytes- cells that gives color to the skin
- contains melanin- dark brown pigment contained in melanocytes
Dermis
Dense, fibrous connective tissue layer of the skin, also known as corium
Sebaceous glands
Oil glands in skin
Sudoriferous glands
Sweat glands
Anhidrosis
Inability to sweat normally (inability to cool itself, overheating)
Ecchymosis
Bruise; a black and blue mark; a large purpura (Chymo=juice)
Nevus
Congenital malformation on the skin that can be epidermal or vascular Aka a mole
Verruca
An epidermal tumor caused by a papilloma virus Aka a wart
