What is the charter of rights and freedoms?
What sets out the individual rights and rights for groups in society called collective rights
What is Constitution?
The law that sets out the framework for how Canada should be governed
What is the highest law in Canada?
The constitution. All other laws must be consistent with it
What does the charter say about restricting rights?
The government is allowed to restrict rights
What are the five groups of individual rights under the charter?
Fundamental Freedoms Democratic rights Mobility Rights Legal rights Equality Rights
What are the fundamental rights?
- The freedom to express your opinions
- The freedom to choose your own religion
- The freedom to organize peaceful meetings and demonstrations
- The freedom to associate with any person or group
What are the democratic rights?
- The right to vote for members of house of commons
- The right to vote for a new government every 5 years
What are the legal rights?
- The right to be free of search, imprisonment or seizure without reasons backed by law and evidence
- The right to a fair and quick public trial by a court that assumes you are innocent until proven guilty
What are the equality rights?
To be free of discrimination
Who does the charter of rights and freedoms apply to?
Everybody in Canada weather they are a citizen or not. Except for the right to vote and the right to enter or leave
What are labour unions?
An organization of workers that acts to protect their rights and freedoms
