a simple way to organize data into different levels
What is frontloading?
a direct method of getting to the main idea quickly
What are advantages of frontloading?
saves reader time, establishes proper frame of mind, prevents frustration
What are the benefits of indirect method of writing?
respects feelings of the audience, encourages a fair hearing, minimizes a negative reaction
what are fragments?
a broken-off part of a complex sentence
What is a run-on sentence?
when two independent clauses are run together without punctuation or a conjunction
What is a comma splice?
when a writer joins two independent clauses with a
comma
How do you revise a comma-splice sentence?
use conjunction (and), conjunctive adverb (however), or semicolon
what are redundant words?
needless repetition of words whose meanings are clearly implied by other words
ex. final outcome-final is redundant and omitted
What is parallelism?
sentences with balanced parts that are easy to read and understand
How do you achieve parallelism?
use similar structures to express similar ideas
What is jargon?
special terminology for a particular activity or profession
what is slang?
informal words and changed meanings
