Chapter 3 Flashcards
Chthonic
This adjective, describing something related to forces from the
underworld, won’t often come out of your mouth. (But if it does, remember
the “ch” is silent: say “thonic.”) ( Do Satan and chthonic forces really exist the way they are depicted in books or it’s just for creating a mystery element in life?)
Autochthonic
“on native ground, originating where
found,” ( Soni Mahiwaal is a autochthonic folklore of Punjab about lovers.)
Hector/Hectoring
“to bully or to try to force someone to do some
thing.” ( I was hectored in school for being overweight , even by my sports teacher.)
Hermetic/Hermetically
a jar so completely sealed that no air can get in (Overthinkers often hermetically seal their brain thinking about scenarios that are never gonna happen which can often lead to mental health problems over time. Experience dear.)
Junoesque
It describes a woman who is unusually tall
and stately and so beautiful as to seem divine. ( Aishwarya rai was so junoesque in her young age that there were allegations of her getting a plastic surgery.)
Mercurial
describe someone whose moods change very rapidly (I am highly mercurial on my periods : one moment i holding a knife against your neck and the other moment i am ordering a shirt for you which says love you under the collar.)
Mnemonic
This adjective refers to memory or relating to memory. phrase “mnemonic device.” ( My father doesn’t have good mnemonic when it comes to remembering names.)
Muse/Bemuse
The verb “to muse”
means to lose yourself in your thoughts, perhaps awaiting inspiration. If you
are “bemused,” you have passively gotten to a state of unfocused thinking,
again possibly to allow yourself to receive inspiration. ( My habit of musing while travelling often gave me really good ideas for my writings.)
Odyssey
describe a literal
journey or a journey of the intellect or spirit ( I often fantasized about going on an odyssey during pandemic , it gave me false hope but let’s focus on the part that it gave me hope and above all a sense of relief.)
Saturnine
means gloomy or even bitterly sarcastic and
mocking ( Manseerat’s saturnine nature is one of the reasons why people leave her and she labels it as a silly habit that’s not under her control)
